Maia
Barouh + Yasuaki Shimizu
Saturday 15 January at Saravah
Tokyo
It all started in 1982, when
Yasuaki Shimizu collaborated with Pierre Barouh on the legendary
album Le Pollen, then moved to Paris. Friends ever since,
Shimizu will soon perform with Pierre's world-music traveler
daughter Maia,
who is now an extraordinary multi-instrumentalist. The Saravah
Tokyo venue, newly opened in central Shibuya, also happens
to be run by Pierre Barouh's own label Saravah, one of Europe's
oldest independents.
For Japanese readers who may be interested in the whole story, Maia’s
mother and corporate director of Saravah, Atsuko Ushioda, tells it
to Web da Capo:

J.
S. Bach's Goldberg Variations
Yasuaki Shimizu & Saxophonettes
concert 27 February
The clock’s ticking down
for Yasuaki Shimizu & Saxophonettes’ world premiere of
Bach’s Goldberg Variations, arranged by Shimizu
for five saxophones and four contrabasses. This concert is presented
by Tokyo’s Sumida Triphony Hall as one in its annual series
of commissions dedicated to Bach’s extraordinary composition.
Both faithful to the original and divergent where Shimizu has seen
fit, the performance promises to be–like Shimizu’s
world-first Cello
Suites arrangements for tenor saxophone–both a historic event
and a genuine celebration of Bach’s unparalleled inventiveness
and joy. Booking details below.
