Pentatonica
New album on sale 25 April
Yasuaki Shimizu & Saxophonettes swan dive into the magical, enigmatically
nostalgic and decidedly sensuous realm of the pentatonic scale.
It began two years ago with
Shimizu’s self-imposed confinement in the Dolomites to compose.
In 2006, he then assembled his band, spent a year or so between
rehearsal and recording, and finally his original compositions
are ready for all to hear. Fifteen tracks including "Dolomiti
Spring," a balletic composition brimming with the optimism
of a new season; "Yoitokosassa," inspired by the primal
energy of Asian folk rhythms; and the arrangement of the traditional
Ethiopian song "Tèw Semagn Hagèré," with
lyrics and a rare vocal performance by Shimizu in the role of a
mystic storyteller.

Yasuaki
Shimizu & Saxophonettes
Tickets now on sale for concerts
celebrating the release of the new album, Pentatonica.
Hand-in-hand with Bach, Shimizu sets his new five-tone
puzzles adrift in real time.
The new Yasuaki Shimizu & Saxophonettes
lineup made its first public appearance last fall, just before
recording Pentatonica in a warmup session at Super Deluxe,
Tokyo. So well attended was the event that one scheduled concert
suddenly became two! This marks the group's first appearance since
then. The program will interweave selections from Pentatonica with
Bach interpretations for saxophone, and feature the dance of special
guest Masako Yasumoto.
