Yasuaki Shimizu + David Cunningham
100 years, 100 minutes, 100 notes What better way see out the year than
with a live exchange between two old friends: London-resident musician/producer David
Cunningham joins Yasuaki Shimizu for the first time since their collaborative
installation Kioku no Gekijo in 1990. The evening at Super Deluxe in
Roppongi with Cunningham on laptop guitar and Shimizu on tenor sax and piano
could easily
inspire
some
creative movement...

Seventh Garden
Quietude, silence... Familiar yet unknown sounds
that redefine the
parameters of music
Yasuaki
Shimizu's new album features alternative arrangements of the soundscapes
he produced for the Dream Garden Factory—Sound Garden at Pacific
Flora 2004.
This condensed version of the sound installation—premised
on silence as the source of all sound—includes a children's
chorus/tenor saxophone combination, sine-wave driven rhythmical
electronica, new versions of early songs by Yasuaki Shimizu/Mariah,
original baroque-style compositions, and lots more.

Pacific Flora 2004
Dream Garden Factory—Sound Garden
Yasuaki Shimizu produces a soundscape for the Dream Garden Factory pavilion
that encompasses the six (changing monthly) thematic gardens: Kabuki, Chef's,
Fortune, Snow, Robot, and Moon.
Occasional ambient sounds—drops of water, a bird's song, a murmuring
brook, rustling leaves—coalesce into a single microcosm in Shimizu's
nontonal composition. Based on the polyphonic elements characteristic of
baroque music, the soundtrack forms a "seventh garden" unto itself.
The photo on the right (click to enlarge) shows the multichannel speaker "Elizabeth" specially
designed for this project.

Time and Again
Yasuaki Shimizu & Saxophonettes album reissue
The new, remastered edition of the 1993 saxophone and orchestra masterpiece.
Originally released in 1993, this
series of innovative melodies is a stunning rendition of Yasuaki Shimizu's
well-honed intellect. Orchestrated with sumptuous string arrangements
and vibrant tenor saxophone, the album offers delicately cool music
highlighting details as subtle as the saxophonist's breath. What
might
at first strike nostalgic chords is in fact timeless sound that retains
every bit of its freshness and makes for exciting listening even now,
another ten years later.
Out of print since the late 1990s, the reissued Time and
Again features
two original remixes by The Orb—"Secret Squirrel" and "Morocco
Mole"—formerly released exclusively in the UK and the US following
the album's first appearance. This enhanced CD also includes Hiroyuki
Nakano's
video "Moths
and Cortisone," a variation on the 2004 edition's overall theme "return
to reality."
